In "signature" poses of Nihonbuyo, the body is turned at an oblique angle (to the audience) while the face is turned forward. If we put it in writing like that, you may imagine a twisted body, but in reality, it is not so. When the body is turned at an oblique angle, the whole body looks neat and shapely. And if the face is turned to the front, the audience's eyes will go to the face. In fact, this is a trick that can also be used when having your picture taken. You will look more slender if you place yourself at a slight angle (to the camera).
