OKEIKO 13
The ‘procession of the courtesans’ (oiran dōchū) is a scene of beautifully dressed courtesans welcoming their guests. The highest-ranking oiran walks accompanied by young courtesans and manservants – which would be called a glamorous parade in today’s terms. The unique walking style of the courtesans is called ‘soto-hachimonji’(‘outward-figure-eight’), since the steps look like they are tracing the Chinese character for the number eight with their feet. This  scene is depicted as a ‘dance’ .
