‘Mitate’ with the fan (oogi).

The word ‘mitate’ (as a notion in performing arts) is difficult to translate into other languages. It is close to the meaning of metaphor, but slightly different. ‘Mitate’ is when A is expressed by B. In this case A=the fan represents B=a mountain, a spinning wheel, a flute, the wind etc. ‘Mitate’ is used in genres other than Nihon Buyo, e.g. rakugo, waka, Japanese cuisine or Japanese gardens.
