Continuing our rōkyoku performance series with a new piece of popular artist Tamagawa Nanafuku! This time she offers a glimpse into the lives of rōkyokushi apprentices a hundred years ago. The story takes place at the beginning of the Meiji era, when the genre of Japanese narrative singing was still called ’naniwabushi’. The protagonist Namitarō was born for the stage, but without a master to teach him, he has to work at constructions to earn a living. One day, however, his fate seems to change when he gets introduced to Ishikawaya Hamaroku, who gladly takes him on as a student. Is it possible though, that there is not much for master Hamaroku to teach young Namitarō…? Accompanied on shamisen by kyokushi master Sawamura Toyoko.
