”The Three Horsemen of the Kan’ei era” is a play originally written for the genre of kōdan, a style of traditional storytelling. The whole narrative about the three horsemen of Kan’ei era is very long, depiciting the lives of the three best horsemen, who lived during the reign of the third shōgun of Edo. This video presents only one chapter, telling the story of one horsman, Magaki Heikuro. During this performance we learn how Magaki met and accepted Dodohei – a cheeky but hard-working fellow - as his servant.
Our performer, TAMAGAWA Nanafuku started her rōkyoku carrier as a kyokushi (musician), but now mainly performs as a rōkyokushi, who tells the narrative stories alternating between singing and prose parts. From traditional to modern, the rōkyoku pieces performed by her are very diverse; moreover she also creates new pieces. In 2018, she travelled to seven countries in Europe and Central Asia as ’Japan Cultural Envoy’ appointed by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs.
